Written Scheme of Investigation

The Written Scheme of Investigation (WSI) is a project specific, formal and “live” document forming the agreement between the client, the appointed archaeologists, contractors and the relevant stakeholders. The document sets out detailed archaeological method statements that mitigate the effects on all the known and potential archaeological features within the development area.

The document will assist the consenting process, including the compilation of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Environmental Statement (ES). The WSI document should also provide confidence for the developer in terms of clarifying any archaeological work that is necessary pre- and post-consent.

WSIs have historically been used in terrestrial planning but is now a requirement in all forms of marine development, including the offshore renewables industry, as well as port development and mineral extraction.
